DairyProcess Controls in the Dairy Industry generally fall into two categories; material handling and batch processing. Material handling projects have included Ice Cream Pail Fillers, Ice Cream Poly-Tray Hardener, Freezer controls, and various Palletizer control systems. One of the challenging aspects of working with cold products is the necessity to design optical sensor layout such that the frost generated by "Quick-Freeze" systems do not fool the photo-eyes with reflections, etc. Plastic wrapping can create the same effect and must be accounted for during design. The handling and stacking of cardboard milk containers and other dairy products is a fast process; upsets can quickly back the line up to the source of production within seconds. These systems tend to be pneumatically powered and requiring an understanding of the variations in plant air supply to tune a system to reduce disturbances. Our experience with these systems including, compressor controls, gives us a very comprehensive approach to system implementation. For Batch control systems, Universal Dynamics has designed and installed numerous "Clean In Place" (CIP) systems that are typically used at the end of each production day. The value of a well-designed cleaning system is especially important to the restart of operations after dormant periods such as holidays or weekends. Ensuring rapid system start-up with all permissives present and/or alarmed on an intuitive graphics display is a key consideration of a Universal Dynamics design.
