Electrical Utilities

Universal Dynamics has extensive experience within the electrical utility industry. Services include design, construction supervision and commissioning of substation electrical engineering and control projects in public utilities and private industry.

During modernization projects we review options and identify solutions that will reduce risk during changeover. This includes working with our customers to develop appropriate implementation plans and procedures.

Electrical Engineering

Our engineers are well versed in electrical systems design and operation. Our projects involve all aspects of power engineering from establishing the soil resistance of a new substation site to modifying existing protective relaying systems for new loads.

We provide power system studies, feasibility studies, conceptual design, detail design, construction supervision, commissioning and troubleshooting services to the Utility Industry. Our engineers are experts in protective coordination, load flow, harmonic, insulation coordination, reliability, motor starting and short circuit studies. We have in-house CYME and SKM power analysis tools and have also worked with EDSA, PTI and ETAP programs.

We recognize the importance of reliability and maintainability in the design of power and control systems for modern industrial plants. Universal Dynamics personnel have been employed in heavy industry and understand the necessity of providing clear, concise documentation for the purpose of future maintenance and troubleshooting work.

Continual technical development is required to stay on top of the latest developments. At Universal Dynamics our engineers are all active members of the IEEE and attend conferences and courses to enhance their knowledge of electrical systems.

Control Systems

Our control System services include the design and upgrading of generating and substation control systems. We have extensive experience in the following areas:

  • development of specifications and tendering of control system components
  • system configuration
  • programmable logic controller (PLC) programming
  • programming of graphic human-machine interfaces (HMIs)
  • design and drawings for field wiring changes
  • system hardware and software testing
  • startup and commissioning

In all projects, we work with the operators and provide extensive training to ensure acceptance of the technology and application.

Data Acquisition

Event logging and time stamping of critical events is a key component of a utility data acquisition project using sequence of event technology and a relational database data capture can be done with 1 millisecond accuracy.

Database tables, view screens and summary reports provide information about alarms and field inputs for a local operator and can be remotely viewed using a high-speed communications network. This type of system enables faster resolution of faults and improved system reliability, particularly in unmanned locations.
