Universal Dynamics at the ISA/POWID Conference
June 4, 2000

Bill Gough of Universal Dynamics presented one of more than 50 technical papers at the ISA/POWID/EPRI Controls and Instrumentation Conference in San Antonio, Texas on June 4 - 9, 2000. The paper, entitled "Advanced Control of Steam Superheat Temperature on a Utility Boiler" was well received by the 75 attendees.

The paper describes the application of a predictive adaptive model based controller (Brainwave®) on a 430 MW Utility Boiler to control steam superheat temperature. Steam superheat temperature control is critical to the efficient operation of the utility boiler steam turbines. Traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are difficult to apply in this application due to the significant time delay and changing process dynamics as a function of turbine load.
