UDL and BCIT
Join Forces to Protect Industry from Cyber Attacks

PRESS RELEASE: October 1, 2002
Richmond, BC, Canada

Universal Dynamics Limited (UDL) and the Group for Advanced Information Technology (GAIT) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Technology Centre have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly reduce the risk to their industrial customers from cyber-based security intrusions.

Both BCIT/GAIT and UDL have been separately addressing process network cybersecurity issues since 1999 and are now jointly continuing to build an ever expanding database of incidents and solutions. GAIT operates a special Internet Engineering laboratory to simulate the network traffic of a large industrial facility. It is uniquely designed to be able to test process control system components and associated networks for security breaches. UDL is an advanced process and controls software and engineering company that has been providing industry with "technology to improve productivity" since 1965.

The UD/BCIT team can provide a complete suit of unsurpassed excellence tasks in cybersecurity risk management such as:

  • Audit Control System Security
  • Security Policy Development
  • Network Architecture Development
  • Intrusion Detection Systems
  • Security Policy Exception Tracking
  • Incident Response Plans
  • Penetration Tests

The safety risks to industrial control systems from cyber attacks has been recognized by the United States government in their recent National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace. As part of this initiative, the FBI Infrastructure Protection and Computer Invasion Squad has been presenting at industry sponsored conferences to ensure that industry is aware of the magnitude of the risk that cyber invasion presents. Many industry groups have joined the industry-government Partnership for Critical Infrastructure Security (PCIS) to address these issues so that a legislated solution is not required. One such initiative has been between the Department of Energy and the Utility indsutry which produced the document "21 Steps to Improve Cyber Security of SCADA Networks".
