The Hong Kong and China Gas Co.

Upgrades to Hong Kong's major fuel gas plant improve reliability of production levels

Hong Kong and China Gas awarded Universal Dynamics the contract to review and upgrade electrical backup systems at the Tai Po plant in late 1995. The full project budget to completion was approximately $5 million.

The Tai Po gas plant is the major fuel gas production facility in Hong Kong, producing fuel gas from naphtha and supplying approximately 1.2 million cubic meters in domestic, commercial and industrial sectors in all parts of Hong Kong.

As the major supplier of fuel gas for the area, it is critical that production at the Tai Po plant meets demand and the distribution system is adequately pressurized. Universal Dynamics performed a reliability review for the electrical supply system, analyzed failure probabilities within the existing system, and identified lower reliability components.

Following this review, Universal Dynamics recommended that uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) be installed in critical gas production areas of the plant. This proved to be more cost effective than backing up the entire gas production process, which was another option under consideration.

Moreover, by raising the overall reliability of the plant through the installation of UPS in critical areas, the Tai Po plant can now maintain necessary fuel reserves with fewer production units operating at higher rates and efficiencies than before the plant upgrade.
